Helping The Mentally Challenged Children Education Essay
In 1971 Mr. Imdad Siddiqui envisioned the creation of a school with the sole purpose of helping the mentally challenged children and helping them fit in along with the rest of the world. He envisioned a future where normal and special children will work together and help build a future which is made for all with countless opportunities and blessings coming all the way even for the special children. His vision to create a school for these children stem from his desire to see them move on and succeed in the world like everyone else and he worked tirelessly for the achievement of such purpose. Through hard work and dedication he was able to build this school from scratch and it has been more than 40 years since the school’s inception and little by little the school has benefited these children and helped them stand on their own feet and become independent. Though not all have been able to move on in life but there have been many who now hold their own jobs and earn a living for themselves and they always come back and thank this school for it helped them do what their parents could not.
At a time when there were no Departments at the Government level for Special persons (set up in 1985) and no visible efforts for the recognition of disabled population, the Markaz was set up as a special initiative at Karimabad where it still stands today and where there are still very few or no schools for special children. Its founder, Mr. Imdad Siddiqui, began this noble endeavour with strength of only 5 students. To date, Markaz-e-Umeed has helped more than 10,000 poor, innocent Special Students get Special education & training over the past 40 years. They believe their prized asset is the pool of Markaz supported Special students who are today trained and live a near normal life without becoming a burden on their families and on the country.
Mr. Zeeshan Siddiqui, the current Director of Markaz-e-Umeed, is now carrying on work of his father by providing improved facilities to the currently enrolled children in the school by committing to creating an ambiance for nurturing innovation, creativity and excellence in the students by supporting interdisciplinary research and development for the benefit of society. For this purpose, they have employed dedicated and committed staff members who provide their services out of the need to help these special children thrive in their academic and as well as professional lives.
They are striving to provide free hospital based facilities regardless of the children’s ability or disability. They have created a powerful and important paradigm to help empower the children in their daily lives. Today the school caters to the needs of over 140 special children, those who suffer mental and physical disabilities.
2011 brought unique accomplishments to Markaz-e-Umeed providing a set of new opportunities and possibilities for the teachers and students alike, motivating the team to move forward with renewed pace and energy. Their basic purpose is to maximize awareness about the students’ dignity and wellbeing in the society.

In addition, their team is knowledgeable in choosing outside activities and programs to complement the academic curriculum. Umeed Research & Training Centre
The foundation stone of Umeed Research & Training Center was laid down by Ex. Governor Fakharuddin G. Ibrahim in the year 1991 and since then this centre has been performing its duties. Various researches have been made in the centre regarding new teaching methodologies and how to provide training to the mentally retarded children as their needs are much different from those of a normal child.
Most of the students who come in markaz-e-umeed are mentally retarded they are physically old but their minds are yet that of a 5-6 year old child so therefore they have huge difficulty in understanding academic education so the faculty focuses more on arts and creative education but if the see that a child is being able to perform in academics then they help them in providing higher academic education, they also provide information to their parents & guardians. They are still continuing to find new and better ways to help them in improving their students lives and in providing hope to their families, they also provide guidance to those children parents who are not admitted in markaz-e-umeed.
Their Facebook page has been recently launched through which they are able to communicate with other Special needs organizations & Schools all over the world, this is helping them in improving themselves through interaction with others and finding different teaching methods.
The Curriculum of the MR children
The MR children do not like an atmosphere where they feel pressure. Atmosphere should be made according to the mental level of the children and taking into consideration the level of their understanding, the curriculum has been formed in such a way that these children should not be a burden on others. Hence the Curriculum is designed in such a way that it can be changed whenever required according to the ability of the child.
Training Methodologies
Training provided to the children at Markaz-e-Umeed:
Speech & Language Therapy
Speech Therapy’s basic focus is on the receptive language, or in understanding the words spoken to you, also improving the expressive language, or the ability to use words to express yourself. It also deals with producing words, such as articulation, pitch, fluency, and volume. Speech problem is a common problem for many special children. They start talking very late and they cannot speak clearly and the person listening to them cannot understand any thing. They speak very little and only say few words from a big sentence, as they cannot utter full sentences. Special needs children are unable to store the words in their memory. The memory for storing of the words is increased through special attention, which is given to reduce the defect in their speech. Markaz-e-Umeed gives special attention to all of their students, to improve their speech pattern and language.
Behavior Therapy
Some of the special needs children have an incomplete understanding and therefore, they learn bad habits due to not getting proper or any attention from their parents. Therefore they can beat up anybody, break things and learn abuse. They are very rigid and have great anger. Such bad habits pose great problems for the family, neighbors and relatives. If they were given attention by the parent from the very beginning, they would not exhibit these habits. But the parents do not pay attention to their child due to unawareness and carelessness, but when the situation is out of control, they try to admit the child and in such a case some of the institutions for training of such children refuse their admission.
When such children are admitted in Markaz-e-Umeed such bad habits of the child are eradicated because these habits pose great problems to the training of the child. This year Markaz-e-Umeed was able to eliminated bad habits of 20 children.
Play Therapy
Games are thought of as a great source of health and this is also applicable to special needs children. Games for special needs children are as necessary as for normal children. This gives physical health, social life and mental growth. The games are especially necessary for special needs children as they do not have this opportunity everywhere. Like other things, these children are also slow in games compared to normal children, they are not very fast and quick in their daily life. To solve this problem of special needs children, Markaz-e-Umeed arranges play therapy. Recently new changes have been made in the playground of Markaz-e-Umeed, so that special needs children can have opportunities to live in a collective and individual atmosphere. Nearly 100 children have benefited from these facilities.
Physio Therapy
Physical Therapy focuses on gross motor skills such as walking, kicking, jumping, and climbing stairs. For adults, this would mean re-learning skills lost due to illness or injury; for these children, it generally involves pursuing developmental milestones that might have been delayed for any number of reasons.
In order to make the parts of the body more empowered against disabilities doctors perform physio-therapy on the children, which is done in hospitals and physio-therapy center. The mentally retarded (MR) children often face such problems for example they use one of their hands very much, give pressure to one of the feet and walk. Some do not use their fingers and can not keep their balance. To solve all these problems, physio-therapy is very necessary. Physio-therapy is suggested in a healthy atmosphere by Markaz-e-Umeed, so that their body parts could be corrected. In the current year 10 children were benefited through physio-therapy through out- reach program.
Agro Therapy
As Markaz-e-Umeed has a spacious environment, it can provide useful training to the special needs children for their physical and mental growth. Therefore, the markaz has been continuing their program of Agro Therapy. In this process, various groups are made, they are taught to sow seeds, to plant, to clean flower pots, to give water to the plants and sweep and clean things. They take great interest in the jobs under the supervision of gardeners. This method provides them a chance to work together.
Sense Training
Man is supreme among all the creatures because he has the ability to use all senses. Yet on the other hand the MR child or even adult lacks such senses and therefore, they are dependent on others for their decisions. To rectify this effect Markaz-e-Umeed has given full attention to the training of senses. New and modern methods have been adopted for making their students aware of there surroundings by being able to use all their five senses. Every year many children benefit from this training.
Toilet Training
The condition for admission of a special child in markaz-e-umeed is that he/she has to be toilet trained so that the children can be trained in a clean atmosphere, as the un-trained children offered problems of many kinds. Therefore, it is necessary that toilet training should be given in an early age at home and then the child should be admitted in the institution.
Realization of Existence
There are several stages of retard ness, there is one such stage that the retarded person is unaware of his/her existence, such a child should be made to realize his existence. This brings a useful change in the child, but it requires a great efforts and one should not be discouraged and provide special attention to such students. This year four Severe MR Children were able to complete their training.
Hyperactivity
There are special kind of MR children who are called Hyperactive. They cannot sit in any place, do not give attention to anything and that is why it makes difficult to teach them. Most of the time is passed in monitoring them, and since they can cause damage to themselves and others through hyperactivity. They cannot be trained in a closed atmosphere; therefore, Markaz-e-Umeed has a big space. In addition special activities have been suggested in the wide field of the markaz, where these children get tired and then they go to their classes and this is the time for their teachers to teach them something. This year Markaz-e-umeed was able to has give 15 hyperactive children training.
Social Development
From the very beginning this has been included in the program of Markaz-e-Umeed that the special needs children should be made a useful member of the society, they should not be ignored. For this purpose, first of all the children are enabled to speak in a way that people can understand them, have respect for them instead of the parent hiding their children from others, who achieve this purpose a feeling is created in the children of mixing with each other and to behave in a polite way and to create awareness in the parent that the special needs children are also human beings, it is necessary that the parent should restore their status in the eyes of others, they should satisfy their need so that they can mix up with other people of the society. Markaz-e-Umeed is getting success in this field every year many children benefit from this program.
Education
The parents of the special needs children have a desire that their children should be educated while very little ability is available in them and they also have a problem of weak memory. Whatever is taught to them today, they forget it tomorrow. Even then it is tried that they should be provided with basic education along with arts and development of different skills. But students who show signs of higher learning ability compared to other students are given extra time and effort to help them in improving themselves in education. At markaz-e-umeed they try their best that every child has learned according to their mental level.
Picnic & Recreation
At Markaz-e-Umeed special needs children are provided facilities for going on picnics and outings like normal children. They enjoy themselves very much when they are taken to parks and in participation, in various events. Also they are given prizes for participating in songs, tablues, national anthems, Naats and Recitation of Holy Quran. They also perform in different programs which are especially arranged for special needs children. In which they enthusiastically performed such as; in Eid Milan & Independence day programs. The teachers also accompanied the children on a visit to the zoo. The purpose of this is to educate special needs children about various animals, their habitat and manner of living.
Assessment, Diagnosis & Guidance
At Markaz-e-Umeed assessment of children is made in a natural atmosphere, as it is easy to know the trends of the children, their capability of learning, & attention in a natural atmosphere. They do not use any test for the above things in the beginning because such type of things and the questions relating to the students are obtained from the parents. After assessment of the children and knowing their mental level IEP (Individualized Education Plan) a program is formed and it is handed over to the teachers. Regular report are taken from the teacher and based on it necessary changes are made in the program so that better results can be obtained. Parents accordingly are given instruction and guidance. During the current year Markaz assessed more than 200 Students.
Integration

Vocational Training
The problem of vocational training of the mentally retarded children is not only faced by the under developed countries but also by developed countries. Common people think that as the children with disabilities do not have a capability of getting education and therefore, they should be taught some professional skill, so that they are not dependent on others and can earn their own livelihood. However, it is true that such children who are not able to live life without help of the others can also not learn appropriate means of earning livelihood, because they do not have consistent memory. They cannot concentrate or pay their attention to anything. Cannot sit at one place, have weak handling, neither take responsibility for anything. Markaz-e-Umeed has created a natural atmosphere so that full opportunities are available to the special needs children for using their capabilities to learn and get educated. The games they play are made so that they given strength to them and made them physically strong. so they are prepared to work in such ways which do not require planning, memorization or much responsibility. In this regard, parents have also given their full cooperation as they understand their children very well.
