Men And Women Nonverbal Communication English Language Essay

“Men are from Mars, women are from Venus”, this metaphor basically describes how different men and women really are. Men believe communication should have a clear purpose, while women on the other hand often use communication to discover feelings and what it is the persons they are talking to wants to say. When communication comes to proximity men prefer face-to-face but women are more comfortable side by side with a man.

Men and women use facial expressions a lot when having a conversation. Women tend to make more eye contact while they communicate with men. They do this because of their nature to be emotionally connected. Women also use facial expressions to convey feelings. A female’s body language is extremely different from a male’s. Women usually function at very high intensity. At the same time, their faces are animated with expressions and hands are in sync with their voices. This all happens when a woman is on her feet but if she is sitting her intensity drops and she brings her arms and legs close into her body. From a man’s perspective, we are more conservative with facial expressions and body contact. When a man is sitting we have unreserved styles by stretching, sprawling, and spreading out.

A female’s nonverbal goal is completely different from a male’s. Women’s actions focus on maintaining a relationship, providing attention, and encouraging participation. They want the conversation to have an emotional nonverbal connection to it. Now, a man wants to get to the point and just get the job done. Men use their body to control the discussion space and keep the space quiet and impassive.

There is a difference in body orientation between men and women. Men tend to gaze into the distance for concentration while in a conversation. Women look directly at the person they are communicating with. Women may not notice a man’s body language is helping them to concentrate and the women may become annoyed. A man’s approach is generally to communicate to transmit information and solve specific problems. Women usually use communications to express feelings and achieve emotional intimacy.

The skill of a woman is better than a man’s. Women are better at interpreting nonverbal signal. Women are also much better at reading types of unintentional nonverbal messages. Although men often send nonverbal signals, they do it much less than women.

Gestures and mannerisms are noticeable in nonverbal communication. Men rely more on a gesture that is obvious and are more likely to express themselves with their hands. Women tend to use more restrained and subtle gestures and exhibit deferential gestures. Both men and women can be persuasive and appear to be interested when they are in a conversation. For example, nodding with agreement and having a positive posture can make someone think that you are listening to them. Appearance is very important if the conversation is supposed to be positive. Women remember the appearance of others better than a man would. To improve communication between men and women your appearance should be pleasant. This is a big part of nonverbal communication.

Men focus on the transfer of data. An example of data would be figures, facts, and other objective information. On the other hand women try to use communication as means of enhancing her relationship with whom she is communicating with. Some experts compare men and women talk as “Report vs. Rapport”. Some habits women may have are showing a sign of agreement or disagreement while conversing. For example, leaning in and shaking their head to show that they are listening. Men also have habits, but instead of shaking their head they will usually exchange their side of thoughts. Men might exchange objective data, such as sports stats. If you communicate in a great way with the opposite sex it will most likely strengthen the relationship with your special someone.

In nonverbal communication there is something called a cluster. A cluster is a group of common movements that reinforce a common point. For example, a headshake and folding of the arms is a sign of resistance to what was said. Regular gestures send a message of informality, but the rest set a point. Another example would be a combination of leaning and nodding shows a sign of approval. Moving onto congruence, the “total impact” of a message is based on 7% of words, 38% tone of voice, and 55% hand gestures, body position, and other forms of nonverbal communication. Incongruence can also contradict a side by a headshake while someone is talking.

Knowing a person’s regular daily behavior is important so you can compare that to how they are feeling that day. If you don’t know how that person behaves on a regular basis how can it be noticed if they are stressed or are upset? That’s why it is important to know the person you care about and how they behave. Consistency is different for everybody. Culture can have an impact on nonverbal communication too. All nonverbal communication is influenced by our cultural heritage. When reading body language it is important to consider the amount of stress a person is under. If the emotion is high, the more likely culture-specific gestures will show.

Keep in mind the five C’s when thinking about nonverbal communication. They are context, clusters, congruence, consistency, and culture. These five parts will help you when trying to figure someone out and how they communicate. People usually use nonverbal communication to reveal their state of mind. Another part of nonverbal communication would be reception. Women are better at understanding a man and how they communicate. Women are often better at picking up inconsistencies between someone’s words and their body language. Sometimes women will be communicating with a man nonverbally then be confused as to why men do not understand them. The reason is because men rely more on verbal communication than women. Eye contact is very important too. Both women and men use eye contact but sometimes use it differently. For example, women use eye contact to communicate emotionally and to show she is paying attention. Men on the other hand use eye contact to intimidate the women by showing dominance.

Body space and closeness is used and preferred differently. Men usually keep a distance from people when they talk to them and never really touch them. Women do the opposite, standing close to people and touching them to connect and emphasize points to who they are talking to. Stereotyping between sexes is very common for most people. For example, most people think women are more sensitive than men, and for men, people think they are vulnerable to fist fighting. This is not true at all; everyone is their own person and can be sensitive to their own opinion. Communication between men and women is never really permanent. Just because a man or women does something stereotypical doesn’t mean that everyone of that gender is just like that.

While in the classroom women use a whole range of non-verbal behaviors to establish physiological closeness with their best friends. When it comes to the classroom women and men have no difference in nonverbal communication. Women don’t use the gestures they normally would have if they were talking to their friends outside of the classroom.

When two human beings come together for the first time to communicate, they quickly make judgments about that person to themselves. For example, when people meet the first things that come to a humans mind is if they are friendly, dominant, or even a potential sexual partner. This is why when speaking to the person, they are not always looking right into your eyes. During conversation body language is used for negotiating personal attitudes. Most of the time gestures are replaced with words to make the message more clear.

A well-developed social person should be able to tell what gesture or movement a person is making only by listening to their voice. Experts on body language and communication can tell what language a person is speaking only by looking at their hands and what movements they are making.

Many people don’t accept or believe that human beings are biologically animals. Scientifically, we are a species of primate which is called homo sapiens, and us homo sapiens have biological rules that we naturally follow. These rules that come naturally to us since we were born make us use body language and gestures. Not one person in the world can avoid showing body language.

When a human is lying it’s rather easy to notice, if you are paying attention to the way they move their body compared to what they are actually saying. For example, when talking to someone look at their hands and face. Their hands might be saying, “I don’t want to do this”, but they are really saying, “Let’s do it”. This usually happens to a person when they are uncomfortable talking to you, are nervous, or don’t know what to say.

Some people may uncomfortable when they are talking to you because of some insecurity they have. For example, a man who is self-conscious about his weight may tug at the skin under his chin to take attention away from his actual body. Also, a woman who is aware of extra pounds on her thighs may pull her dress down so they don’t show as much. All these little movements and insecurities are influenced by the mood in the conversation. If the person was comfortable talking to someone they most likely wouldn’t care if the person saw that they were overweight.

Body language is something that is very easy to see but very hard to see at the same time. For example, an average person on the streets wouldn’t be able to tell if someone was insecure about one of their features. On the other hand somebody like a fortune teller can read a person’s body language extremely easy and can guess an accurate amount of about 80% right about them. This is how they make their money because vulnerable people believe them but they are the ones that are actually giving the answers away to the fortune teller.

A question come upon by man people that learn about body language is if the action is inborn, genetic, or learned culturally. For example, do you fold your left arm over your right or your right arm over your left? 7 out of 10 people fold their arms left over right. This action is inborn. Genetic would be for example, the way someone walks. This can’t be changed is just the genetic way someone walks. Culturally learned is something that you are not born with. This is learned over time from the way you were raised and the people around you.

Overall men are more special than women and want to get to the point to solve the problem if there is one. With women they take their time and solve the problem with more patience than men. Women also use gestures more than men when communicating nonverbally with them.

For the most part men rather have more space and less touching during a conversation with a female. Women are the exact opposite, wanting comforting touches and more closeness. Men sometimes focus when communicating by not looking at their partner. The women sometimes do not realize they are focused while doing this and they get angry at the man.

We have learned that there are lots of differences and advantages when men and women are communicating nonverbally. In the end it seems like both sexes are evened out and have their own certain advantages while communicating.
