Primary Education In Malaysia

Primary education in Malaysia is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. It is the goverment responsibility to give a formal education towards children. Usualy, in Malaysia the compulsory education begin at the age of seven. To make sure that the student has improve on their education, it is been set that student have to sit for public examination at the end of primary education to proceed to the higher level of education. In Malaysia, there are changes in curriculum of education. It starts with the Old Primary School Curriculum before 1982 then it change into New Primary School Curriculum and now education in Malaysia is using Standard Primary School Curriculum.

Old Primary School Curriculum (KLSR) start since Malaysia gained independence. Rahman Talib Report the subject review committee has been established to review the national education policy as proposed in the Razak Report that has been established to review the national education policy as proposed in the Razak Report that has been made on 1956 and early education policy before the 1957 Education Ordinance. There are three stages of education system on this curriculum. In this curriculum, the aim is to teach all the students on how to read and write. Students had been examined to know their ability. Based on Rahman Talib Report, all students must pass in Bahasa Melayu paper. On 1979, Old Primary School Curriculum (KLSR) has been change into New Primary School Curriculum (KBSR). This is because the cabinet committee has found that Old Primary School Curriculum (KLSR) have it weakness in many ways. Such as, the syllabus has been repeated and does not have connection towards each other. In terms of syllabus it is quite a lot and it make the students felt bored. Also, the curriculum activities that have been done had been teach separately from the syllabus and does not have any connection with the formal education.

New Primary School Curriculum (KBSR) has been made due to the changes that had been made by the report of the cabinet committee in implementation of Education Policy issued in 1979. New Primary School Curriculum (KBSR) has been launched fully in 1983. The important objective of New Primary School Curriculum (KBSR) is to make sure that the students appreciate and master the Malay language as the national language and as a tool for solidarity with satisfaction. It also focused on emphasizes mastery of basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic (3M). New Primary School Curriculum (KBSR) also focused on the students holistic in terms of physical, emotion, spiritual, intellectual and social. New Primary School Curriculum (KBSR) had been divided into three basic field; communication, humanity with the environment and field of self-development.

Standard Primary School Curriculum (KSSR) were produce to reorganized and improve the existing curriculum to ensure that students are provided with the knowledge, skills and relevant values to the current needs and challenges of the 21st century. The aim of implementation Standard Primary School Curriculum (KSSR) replacing the New Primary School Curriculum (KBSR) is to increase student interest in the English subject. In Standard Primary School Curriculum (KSSR), there are six spikes of curriculum that has been design, that is communication, spiritual, attitude and value, humanities, physical and aesthetic development of science and technology proficiency self. This curriculum are using curriculum standards document and the design of the curriculum is modular. There are two stage in the curriculum organisation and Standard Primary School Curriculum (KSSR) also focusing on mastering reading, writing, mathematics and reasoning (4M) as well as basic skills and information technology (ICT).

In conclusion, the Ministry of Education always tried the best to improve the education systems in Malaysia especially from the first stage, which is in primary school. Teachers and students have to understand and trying their best to give the cooperation with the structure curriculum that has been made by the ministry of education. Primary education is a very good starter to train the children to be the best among the best by using the curriculum of education in Malaysia.
