New Entrant

A new competitor into an industry will carry additional capability and more competition (BPP, p36). To potential competitors, it is so hard to analyze and generate the detail strategies in order to contend with them. The general solution company usually uses are to augment their product. Company tries to research and create innovation to satisfy customer’s demand.

Substitute

Secondly, substitutes also are the threat for Nokia. In the past, it is the first time when mobile starts to emerge in market; the telephone and beeper are casing the market. Nowadays, though the telephone and beeper cannot vie with mobile telephone, they still make the threat to mobile telephone. Because telephone and beeper with low price of using rate, go with to the people who have low income. Furthermore, although mobile telephone is more suitable with many functions such as downloading music, making video call, watching TV on the move, and browsing the web; some people still like to use telephone. The explanation is that the extra functions mobile telephone has, the easier it is broken down. Clearly, the greater the accessibility of substitutes, the lower the profits in an industry will be predisposed to be (Porter’s Five Forces (1998)). That’s the reason why Nokia need to have diversity products and services to please the customer’s need.

Finally, the strength of competitive rivalry within an industry will influence the prosperity of industry as a whole. That’s the reason why Nokia is strongly committed to the highest standards of ethical conduct and full compliance with all applicable national and international laws (Nokia, 2008).

Connected (Customers and suppliers)

Customers include 2 types: trade customers and consumers. With trade customers, Nokia operates the survey to find out customer’s requirement. Nokia carries this research twice a year. In year 2007, they surveyed almost 1000 individuals, from nearly 400 customers in 80 countries. The response rate was 75%. The responses showed satisfaction with Nokia at the highest level since we began this kind of survey in 1998 (Nokia, 2008). It is easy to recognize that Nokia have succeeded with building customers’ trust. From the research, it revealed the following Nokia strengths driving customer satisfaction: diversity of product range, relationships with their account teams, and logistics (Nokia, 2008). They also recorded customer’s feedback to analyze their comments and make a change which would be suitable to their customers’ demand.

The other type of customer is consumer. There are many consumers over the world, so that Nokia carried out to provide support services to consumers through online, email and call center services, supported by a network of authorized service centers. The support includes basic product information, guides and demonstrations, discussion boards, software updates, advice on specific issues, and warranty repairs. It also helps consumers to find out where to recycle their old products. They aim at getting a holistic picture of consumer experience by using different consumer feedback channels, and respond with targeted improvement actions. The main feedback channels include consumer satisfaction surveys, feedback through independent market investigate companies and Nokia Care contacts (Nokia, 2008).

Synopsis, Nokia really recognize that customer is an important part to make their brand name favor over the world, so that they needs to make customer be satisfied. That’s the reason why they carry out research to find out the change of customer demand.

Nokia appreciate the importance of suppliers, so that they try to build up strong relationships with their suppliers. Their supply found on management process, in which Environmental and ethical considerations have been integrated into all the applicable processes. A thorough assessment is carried out according to our supplier management processes by trained Nokia assessors (Nokia, 2008). If there is no non-conformance, the next appraisal will be organized on an as-needed basis. If they find a supplier is not meeting Nokia’s expectations, they induce them to commit to and implement corrective action. However, if a supplier were to say no to address any of these issues we would be prepared to reconsider our business relationship. Government is also the essentials which sway to Nokia activities directly. Nokia is the world leader in mobility, and they have a lot of stores in numerous countries. Therefore, they are suffered by many dissimilar policies and culture, and they determine to follow policies. Their Code of Conduct sets out how Nokia will act in all our business performance, including our meeting with governments. The principle they follow in their public policy consultation is to engage with government organizations only on issues where Nokia has a convincing contribution to make (Nokia, 2008). They engage with governments all over the world on a wide variety of issues relevant to their business. In 2007 they would like to highlight public policy engagement on the environment and accessibility (Nokia, 2008).

9.7 Appendix 8 Nokia Development and Research

Nokia and the US Army have entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). Army will use Nokia technologies in the areas of PCS, WCDMA 3G, GSM, WiMAX and advanced wireless networking protocols. (Hoskins, R. 2006)

The joint venture project is conducting tests, demonstrations, exploratory exchange efforts that had begun late in 2006. The devices and systems being developed in going to be used by US troops deployed overseas, military intelligence, command operations, communications and general information. (Hoskins, R. 2006)

The Army’s Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC), will evaluate many of the products, Nokia already has, and to see if the could be used for current Army operations. (Hoskins, R. 2006).

CERDEC, the main Research and Development divisions of the Army will be working closely with Nokia’s research and development team. The Army and Nokia will also be working the Department of Defense and Homeland Security to develop technology for Government use. (Hoskins, R. 2006)

Nokia has 20,882 people working in R&D. With accounts for 36% of it’s total workforce (Hoskins, R. 2006).

Nokia’s R&D expenditure total 3,825 million in 2005, which was 11.2% of its total net sales. (Hoskins, R. 2006)

Nokia’s operating margin target is 15% for the next two years. Nokia is also hit its target for R&D expenditure to 9%-10% of its net sales. It is expected to have estimated cost synergies of 1.5 billion by 2010. (“Nokia Standard Document Template,” 2006)

Nokia has concentrates in the area of telecommunications. Nokia mostly makes cell phones. Although there not exclusively cell phones, they have a civilians contractor, they do extensive work the government and the US Army.
