The Concept Of Friendship English Literature Essay

The age of was written the great Gatsby maybe influence in how a person watched a friendship. In this book is very hard find a specific issue about friendship, but it could be interpreted as well. Everything in this book is related with money and materialism. So maybe anything in this book is real. Furthermore, Nick at the beginning of the book says that “I’m inclined to reserve all judgments…” (Fitzgerald 1925:2) But he always thought about people personalities in a reserved way. On the other hand, he lied to Daisy about Tom´s affaire and at the same time lied about Jay Gatsby wealthy. That is the reason, Nick in depth is considering a cynic and liar men. But made an analysis regarding to the friendship between both, you can recognized a close relationship between Nick Carraway with his neighboring Jay Gatsby.

“I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few

Guests who had actually been invited”… (Fitzgerald 1925:19)

In that specific moment, started the relationship between Gatsby and Carraway. Even though, Jay Gatsby was a very smart person he got closer to Nick not because he was a nice person, it was for the reason that he wanted a reunion with Nick´s cousin Daisy.

“I talked with Miss Baker,”… (Generally) “I’m going to call up Daisy

To-morrow and invite her over here to tea.”

“I don’t want to put you to any trouble.”

“What day would suit you?”… (FitzGerald 1925:39)

Subsequently Nick knew everything about Gatsby´s life; he got involved with situations such as Daisy and Jay. Nick helped to revive Jay and Daisy’s love. Moreover, he organized the meeting between both in his home. Getting closer to the end of the novel is when the reader see’s the

true friendship between Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway.  Whenever Gatsby would ask Nick to do something Nick would always have or make the time to do it.  The strongest example of the genuineness of Nick is when Jay Gatsby was murdered by Mr. Wilson; Nick took care of all the arrangements for the funeral and all Gatsby’s assets.  Nick said

“I found myself on Gatsby’s

side, and alone.” (Gatsby, p.165)

Besides, Jay Gatsby had an image of had a lot of friends but when he died the only who was in his funeral was Nick and Mr. Wilson. Nobody was in this issue nether his lover Daisy, Jordan or that entire people who attended his parties every Saturday; at the end Nick was loyal with Jay maybe. Nonetheless Nick and Jay were very good friend, you can perceived that Nick and Jay were cynic and everything around them were false even their friend.

On the other hand you can mention the close relationship between Ernesto Guevara and Alberto Granados. This friendship is very different from the previous one. Beginning with both had the same feeling of friendship not only focusing on their but also focusing in the other ones. The first step to say that it was a truly friendship is when Ernesto was a flu and Alberto Helped him to be better.

In the book you can read that both were worried each other. Subsequently, during their journey, they always look for places to sleep and something to eat, but all the time they were together. But it is very important to recognize that every friendship has some disputes and in this case, usually they tried to fix it as soon as possible. Ernesto and Alberto had the same ideal, they all the time were agree on everything that they do. Besides, they share everything even their blankets.

“The couple, numb with cold… (Generally) they had not one single miserable blanket to cover themselves with, so we gave them some of ours and Alberto and I wrapped the other around us as best we could” (Guevara 2003: 77-78)

The important thing is to recognize that every friendship has some disputes and in this case, usually they tried to fix it as soon as possible. They were in some problems during the travel particularly when they arrived to the south of Chile. A little conflict involving Ernesto and a Chilean woman who was married, as Chilean protect all around them even their women started a fight with this Argentian tourist. Ernesto and Alberto had the same ideal, they all the time were agree on everything that they do. Besides, they share everything even their blankets.

Naturally, Alberto was worried because Ernesto´s asthma illness. They told everything including love things, especially Alberto who in every place he had an affair with girls. As a result they were together and lived experiences in the same moment. Afterward, their friendship remained long years since now.

The contrast between these friendships, in my personal opinion is that the Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby were very fake in order to not being as honest they had to in comparison with Alberto Granados and Ernesto Guevara. In addition, my personal friendship concept is closer with the last ones. A friend had to be sincere, I disagree with Nick acting, especially because I consider that he never was sincere either Gatsby or Daisy. A good friendship is an in-depth relationship combining trust, support, communication, loyalty, understanding, empathy, and intimacy. As a conclusion the friendship between Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway is a questionable one and full of doubt.

“He had seen me several times and had intended to call

On me long before but a peculiar combination of circumstances had

Prevented it signed Jay Gatsby.” (Fitzgerald 45-46)

On the other hand, I can say that is important mention that Ernesto Guevara and Alberto Granados were closer friends, the second one went with him to a journey around Latin America and this especial travel changed this mind and the view of the world. I am able to say that if some of the friend act in a wrong way the friendship never will the same. Yet, Nick is compared with Alberto because the first one to me was very strange. In comparison with Nick and Jay, Ernesto and Alberto always talked with truth and never was a self interest friendship as Nick and Jay Gatsby were.
