By this time Acer has a growth rate of 45 %. Acer acquires the Texas Instruments mobile PC division in 1997. It is the acquisition of the mobile PC division that gives Acer the opportunity to invade the PC manufacturer sector of the business. However Acer s success is based on their ability to operate in a rapidly technologically changing environment, logistics. 2001 to 2007 Acer evolves from a producer powerhouse to a globally recognized computer brand. This charismatic leader is interested in the work and non-work activities of the people they manage. This manager understands that productivity is linked with subordinate wishes, desires, work environment, family relations, and productivity. (Lominger, 2008) This leader is compassionate and thinks of others needs first. This leader is approachable by subordinates and relates well with equals. (Lominger, 2008)

In the same way the supportive leader inspires a sense of direction because they understand the vision, mission and long term purpose of the agency. (Kemp)This approach allows the leader to make bold moves in directing others, managing diverse populations, and taking initiative while challenging the status quo . Change needs to be implemented with realistic, achievable and measurable items. If the stakeholders are involved is easier to sale the idea of the change for all the parties involved.

Austin on the other hand believes that there are five essential steps to implement change. Identifying stake holders: stakeholders can be identified based on their power to help or hinder change. Align arguments to build momentum: if the company can build a sense of connection and ownership among stakeholders they can be the supporters of the change. Create and Engagement Strategy: once stakeholders are connected to the plan the change leader can propose deadlines, and order of actions. Identify Trigger Events: these events can be competitor s actions, changes in regulations, changes in support from stakeholders, or any other shift in the original plan. Plan to Be Wrong: since innovation change or implementation are new to a corporation there should be build in the idea that something can go wrong and prepare to deal with unexpected issues that may arise in the process of implementation. (Austin, 2009)

Austin also recommends taking into account how employees may behave towards the change. Employees are also stakeholders and sometimes they may oppose the changes. How is the company going to sale the idea to the employees? Austin says that companies need to give employees time for process the reaction and assist them in the process.

In the 2003 meeting for Innovation in Governance and Public Administrations in Bahia Brazil Glor discusses three aspects to implementation innovation: first is the desire to innovate and the finances to support innovation; second is effective implementation and consequences, and third the context of innovation and which innovations are chosen. (Glor, 2003)

The will to innovate; Glor explains that businesses, governments, etc. avoid solving problems. They ignore the problems or provide inadequate resources when they do act. Glor s first suggestion is to create the will to act to correct issues though innovation. There are many reasons why individuals, governments, and corporations do not adopt innovation. Among those reasons Glor inform us of the power of institutions, fear of change, and the most important reason is people. People who acting as themselves or in behalf of a company, or an institution do not want to change and influence innovation. The will to innovate comes from two reasons, innovation that arises as a reaction of a crises and needs. (Glor, 2003) Innovation can be also created as a response to create a market for new items to sale, (proactively). (Glor, 2003)

Even thought Glor speaks of effective implementation of innovation in the public sector one can gather that it can be applied to the private sector. Management is a key to administering the speed in which innovation is adopted, implementing innovation appropriately, keeping communication open and effective. Management also plays a key role in providing training, and methods of evaluation to demonstrate success.

Glor explains the last aspect of innovation in terms of the innovation context as transformational and revolutionary . Innovation doesn t happen in a vacuum, it happens in a context of power structures and the society in which it develops. (Glor, 2003) Innovation in this framework facilitates stockholder buy in, and acceptance because it fits the context in which they are living in. (Glor, 2003)

The second kind of innovation is modular; this type of innovation which could be considered a medium size change with relatively small impact on the surroundings. Third kind is architectural innovation could be small but could have strong consequences to the surroundings. Fourth, is a system where multiple attached links to innovation. Fifth, radical innovation would be based on technological or scientific findings in the industry.

In the Innovators Dilemma Christiansen advices companies that most innovations fail, not because there were problems with the product, or some serious flaw. Innovation fails because managers are not ready to achieve the deployment, and sustainability of the tasks assigned for innovation. Sometimes managers standardize ideas for growth which may not work for each innovative project. These capabilities then turn into hindrances when the disruptive powers of innovation become evident. (Christiansen, 177)

It is important in Christiansen s (2003) view to make sure that a corporation needs to analyze its capabilities, resources, and values. Resources include people, equipment, technology, product design, brands, information, cash, and relationships with suppliers. (Christiansen, 178) Processes are defined as the patterns of interaction, coordination, communication, and decision making through which the accomplish transformation. (Christiansen, 183) Many corporations set up from the beginning a mission vision and values which set the corporations personality. Values are the standards by which employees make prioritization decisions. (Christiansen, 185) Employees are at every level of the decision making. At the client level an employee decides whether a particular customer is more important than other, what to ship first, what process to use and when. At a corporate level what priority comes first, what product to emphasize, what to invest on etc. Christiansen makes clear the larger and more complex a company becomes it important to continually train employees to act autonomously when making decisions that move the company strategically. (Christiansen, 186)

In the case of Acer innovation, the major challenge can be the fast progressive aspect of technological innovation. Christiansen makes a point that in many cases technological speed can outstrip what markets need. Awareness and working on potential pit falls in innovation can assist companies in the process to avoid failure when launching new products or services. Some companies like Acer that have remarkable teams that follow established management techniques, organizational structures that have made Acer a very competitive multinational corporation. The challenge Christiansen says, is to help managers recognize that organizational structures are valuable only in certain occasions.

Leadership then, is an important part of innovation. And Innovation is part of the supportive leader. They are good at seeing new ideas, can get creative ideas out of other people, and willing to take risks to put new ideas into action. (Lominger, 2008)Part of this process is the application of any new idea and the impact of such changes in a diverse work environment. (Lominger, 2008) The leader takes into account staff that is culturally diverse, and also a student body that is representative of almost every country in the world. This new ideas have to make sense to all people involved as well as fit the vision and mission of the agency. Likewise integrity and trust are integral parts of the management style since trust and support come from the transparency of this management team.

Future vision and planning give the agency a purpose for the future. Since there is a clear vision for the future, planning is proactive not reactive. This leader communicates the vision in such a way that people get exited about the vision. This excitement makes the future plan come alive and attainable. (Lominger, 2008) They are enthusiastic about the future and prepare not only their companies personnel but their clients to succeed in the future. (Marx, 2006) When directing others Lominger says that this leader sets clear directions, tracks progress, freely shares information, provides timely and useful information, as well as educates and does progressive enforcement of staff so one day some of them too can be effective leaders. In anticipating problems there is the creation of boundary management where teams manage the relationships between people and departments.(Kemp, 2008) Hall mentions that this management style provides indicators of employee satisfaction: there is less intra-group stress and more cooperation; turn over and grievance rates are lower; the leader is viewed as more desirable; there is frequently more productivity . (1999, p. 141) Hall mentions that this may be due to the workers themselves who may adjust their own attitudes independent of the leader. (p. 141)

General supervision the leader understands why people do what they do. (Lominger, 2008) They stay on top of performance issues. The managers are competent in incentives for personal needs for growth through organizational goal achievement . (Kemp, 2008) They set the example for work standards and share power with team members (Kemp, 2008). Since employees gain a new understanding of the vision of the company and they are granted power for decision making costumer relations improve. (Kemp, 2008) This leader does not micro-manage. They routinely delegate work and power so they can be free to use time and energy in developing strategies for the future. (Kemp, 2008) Instead of becoming a judge when dispute appears this manager has already created a team to resolve disputes in the office. The manager maintains relative control through goals and boundaries. Since workers have power in duties and decisions they can anticipate problems and take ownership of how to resolve them. (Kemp, 2008) This leader does not play favorites; they are fair and equitable in treatment. (Lominger, 2008)

The supportive leadership style does not try to please all that work for them. Rather they implement reasonable transparent, honest, channels of communication to keep staff informed, and share information. (Dotlich, 2008) Supportive leaders are very intuitive and gutsy. (Dotlich, 2008) Dr. Dotlich says that they must have head, heart and guts .(2008) The research still can pin point how to make or replicate this type of leader. However some of their characteristics are that they to understand from their mistakes, they are continuously learning and seek feedback from staff and respond and grow. This feedback also helps staff develop and partner with the leader to continue in support of the vision of the agency.

What about outcomes? In Kotter s A Force for Change (as cited in Society for Human Resources Management, 1996) since this management style is not afraid of change, has the support of staff and students alike, the change can be dramatic. Not only can it deliver new services to satisfy costumers, but the new approach to labor relations help to make the corporation more competitive.

The desired leader must have the right character to provide direction and exercise influence over the organization, employees, clients, and suppliers. In some instances this leader can be shaped; however this leader must likely already is. Hopefully in the near future this leadership style can be taught and transferred to others. There is a need among researchers to provide the theoretical background and provide the needed explanations how this leadership style works so we can put it into practice at all corporate.

Hindrances to Leading Innovation and Change

Tucker says that every organization has obstacles to innovation and change. He explains that these barriers can be internal, having to do with cultural impediments. They can be external, having to do with marketplace resistance to change, costs associated with adopting new ideas, or even barriers springing from resistance from channel partners. Ditkoff says that there are key obstacles to innovation here are 29 barriers.

1. When the company lacks a common vision, purpose.

2. Innovation purposes that are not clearly stated by the company for all employees.

3. Senior management that are not vested in the company.

4. Lack of a clear vision and priorities

5. Lack of long term planning.

6. Since there is not a clear vision all the focus is internal.

7. No forward thinking.

8. Resistance to change.

9. Corporate culture that supports stagnation and corporate interest.

10. Lack of planning and preparation towards crisis prevention.

12. Lack of support of new ideas.

13. Slow to make changes to projects that are not successful.

14. Employee fear to bring up problems or criticize the corporation.

15. Lack of planning produces some overworked employees.

Tuckers tell us that an organization needs to plan to overcome barriers to innovation. In order to see if there are any barriers a team may need to set up a dry run on the basis of innovation and see how the system behaves. (Tucker, 2008)

Conclusion:

In the revision of the strategic plan, the environmental analysis would have to be addressed in order for Acer to stay afloat. Some of these issues are more pressing than other, however I think at this point in my view the most pressing issue would be the strengthening the assembly process and the organization activities might be a possible improvement. Since the aspect of logistics management may become an issue in the future this would be a secondary concern.
